kadala kootu curry recipe /kadalai paruppu kootu for riceKadalai paruppu kootu is a traditional festive main menu at our place.Here in our family it is customary at all important functions like marriages to serve this kootu curry .They have this kadala kootu curry recipe as a regular occupant in the menu lists.For rice first uppu paruppu will be served with ghee the next will be this kootu curry.Mostly in marriages they use kadala paruppu but when making at home we even substitute with black beans.kadala kootu curry recipe /kadalai paruppu kootu for riceFor black beans we have to soak it over night and then pressure cook.Usually yellow pumpkin and brinjal is used in combination for this kootu.Here I have used only yellow pumpkin,combining both will be a great option.Small onions are best for this kadala kootu curry recipe.Need not soak Bengal gram dal you can directly pressure cook for more whistles.Its a excellent side dish for rice and its heavenly to have with a simple appalam.

INGREDIENTS:

Kadala paruppu /bengal gram dal – 1/2 cup
Castor oil/vilakennai – 1/2 tsp(for boiling kadala paruppu)
Chopped yellow pumpkin/manjal poison – 5-6 pieces(medium cubes)
Tamarind – 3 tbsp of extract(adjust according to tanginess)
Turmeric powder – 1/2 tsp
Chilli powder – 1 tsp
Coriander powder(kootu powder) – 1 tsp
Crushed garlic cloves – 2-3
Chopped tomatoes – 1
Small onions chopped – 1/4 cup
Salt to taste(rock salt)
Grated coconut – 1 tbsp

For tadka:

Ghee/oil – 1 tbsp
Mustard/kadugu – 1 tsp
Vadagam – a small bit
Asafoetida – 1/4 tsp
Some curry leaves

METHOD:

1.Wash dal and keep ready.
2.Add 2cups water in a cooker add washed kadala paruppu ,castor oil and pressure cook.
3.When done open the cooker(it should be well cooked but not mushy).
4.Add chopped yellow pumpkin to it.
5.Add Turmeric,chilli,coriander powders,garlic,tomatoes,onions and salt.
6.Then let it boil till pumpkin becomes mushy.
7.At this stage if you want add water if needed.
8.When cooked it should be in gravy consistency.
9.In-between do tadka in a separate kadai using the list “for tadka” items.
10.Now add tamarind water.
11.Let it boil for 2 minutes and switch off.
12.Add tadka and some grated coconut stir well.
13.Serve with rice.

Ingredients
  

  • Kadala paruppu /bengal gram dal - 1/2 cup

Notes

Adding coconut is optional.
Instead of ghee you can use ordinary oil.
While adding tamarind extract do not add much as we are adding tomatoes.
Always check while adding the extract and adjust accordingly.
