Thengai Thuvaiyal | Easy Coconut Thogayal Side Dish for Rice

Ingredients
  

  • Grated Coconut - 1 cup

    Kadala paruppu/Bengal gram dal - 21/2 tbsp

    Coriander Seeds - 11/2 tbsp

    Green Chillies - 6

    Needed Rock Salt

    Tamarind - Nellikai size(small Indian gooseberry)

    Oil - 2 tbsp

Method
 

  1. Heat Kadai with oil add Bengal gram dal fry in medium flame & fry Golden.
    2.Then add Coriander seeds & fry nicely.
    3.Add Green chillies Saute.
    4.Now add freshly grated coconut & fry till lightly Roasted.
    5.Add Nellikai size(small Indian gooseberry) & Saute for few seconds add needed rock salt & switch off.
    6.When Contents become cool add to mixer jar & grind by adding water.
    7.The thogayal should be thick & little coarse not fine.
    8.So add water accordingly & grind.
    9.When done transfer to a serving bowl.
    10.Serve with hot rice & enjoy.

Notes

  • Roast dal on medium flame for even cooking and better aroma
  • Fry until golden, not dark brown (avoid burnt taste)
  • Lightly roast coconut — don’t over-roast
  • Use fresh grated coconut for best flavor
  • Add tamarind in small quantity for balanced taste
  • Adjust green chillies based on your spice level
  • Always grind slightly coarse, not smooth
  • Add water little by little while grinding
  • Use rock salt for authentic taste (optional but recommended)
  • Let the mixture cool before grinding
