Having same type of breakfast or dinner will always be monotonous.I personally really hate such reputations frequently.This aval upma is yet another easy dinner diet I would say rather than a breakfast.Somehow I really don’t know how to explain but It suits well as a comforting night dinner for my family. Even it can be a very light diet to take it as an evening snack.My mil used to add more onions for this which is crucial for this recipe(how to prepare aval upma).Me too like it with more onions.Usually most of the time I miss adding lemon juice which still tastes very good.If you want it to be spicy chop the green chillies finely and add.But,for me as I want it to be mild I chopped it as big chunks. Already I have Puli aval in my blog which is a definite simple recipe close to aval upma but using tamarind with no onions. Lets now see how to prepare aval upma.
how to prepare aval upma /poha/beaten/flatted rice upma
INGREDIENTS:
Aval/poha/beaten rice(white) – 1 cup
salt to taste
Big onions chopped length wise – 2(medium)
Green-chillies – 2(chopped)
Some curry leaves
Some chopped coriander
Oil – 11/2 tsp
Mustard seeds – 1 tsp
Bengal gram dal/kadalaparuppu – 1 tsp(or more)
Urad dal/ulundhu(broken) – 1 tsp
Grated ginger – 1 tsp
Grated coconut – 1 tbsp
Turmeric powder – 1/2 tsp,lemon juice – 1 tsp
METHOD:
1.First of all wash poha well in running water ,then soak it till it becomes soft.
2.Strain and squeeze poha out of water,add needed salt and turmeric powder mix and keep ready.
3.Now keep a kadai with oil,add mustard to splutter.
4.Keep the flame low add both urad and bengal gram with curry leaves and leave them to be golden.
5.Once again keep the flame to normal,add chillies,grated ginger .
6.Then add onions and saute till they become translucent.
7.Now add the poha to it and stir once,keep the flame low and close the lid for 2 minutes.
8.Open the lid stir nicely till rawness goes off.
9.Now switch off add grated coconut,coriander leaves and lemon juice.
10.Mix every thing well and serve hot.

Notes
Instead of grated ginger you can use asafoetida while tempering.
If you want the poha to be white avoid adding turmeric powder.
