Maavilakku is one among the inevitable offerings that we serve to god during this auspicious aadi month. We mainly serve it to amman and do pooja with lots of dedication and divinity. In our home my mil,my mother and aunts do this maavilakku during puratasi month.Its a special offering and pooja that we do mainly during puratasi sani kilamai (saturday). Sometimes my paati makes this maavilakku with sugar and its presented to elumalaiyaan as prasadam. Here the jyoti we light is considered and worshipped as the resemblance of perumal himself. The soaking and drying should be done with correct precision so that we get the exact outcome of mavu for making maavilakku. we can use even ready made processed rice flour instead of making it fresh.It turns out to be equally good as homemade one if we use a quality rice flour brand. During this auspicious month of aadi we will see how to prepare maavilakku.
how to prepare maavilakku /maavilakku maavu recipe
INGREDIENTS:
Pacharisi /raw rice – 1/2 cup
Jaggery powdered – 1/2 cup
Cardamom – 2-3
Ghee – 2 tbsp for making dough and some for lamp
METHOD:
1.Soak rice for at least for 45 minutes.
2.Drain and spread it in a cotton cloth under the fan.
3.Test by pressing with the hand and if some rice sticks to hand that’s the correct time to make it to a powder.
4.Grind each batch sieve it and add the remains again to the blender and repeat the same till end.
5.Now take the powdered jaggery in a mixie add cardamom grind to make it fine.
6.Add the ground rice flour to the jaggery mix and grind it again to make it blended well.
7.Transfer these contents to a bowl add ghee make a dough.
8.Make shapes like lamp with hands by making a dent at the center.
9.Make decorations with manjal(turmericpowder) and kum kum(kungumam) powder.
10.Put ghee into it with rolled cotton wick and lit the lamp.

Notes
Adding ghee while kneading is to get a nice flexible pliable dough.
You can make it using store-bought rice flour also.
If you feel that the dough is too dry add little water to make a dough.
