Halwa puttu / rice cake with no oil or ghee / அல்வா புட்டு

Ingredients
  

  • Idli rice - 1 cup (200 ml cup)

  • Jaggery powdered - 2 cups

  • Cardamom powder - 1 to 11/2 Tbsp

  • Dry ginger powder - 1 tsp

  • Water to dilute batter - 4 cups

  • Some more water for grinding and paagu

  • Coconut chunks - 1 1/4 cup

Instructions
 

  • 1.Soak rice for2-3 hours and grind it smoothly.
    2.Take it in a mixing bowl and add 4 cups of water and dilute it nicely and keep.
    3.In a kadai add jaggery powder with some water and dissolve.
    4.When it dissolves filter and again transfer to the same kadai.
    5.Add diluted mixture to this jaggery syrup and bring to boil by continuous stirring.
    6.At one stage it starts to thicken.
    7.Now add coconut chunks, cardamom powder and ginger powder stir in well.
    8.You can check for doneness by touching with wet hands if it come out clean its ready.
    9.Spread a white cotton cloth and scoop out mixture by dipping laddle with water for each scoop or smear it with some ghee.
    10.Leave it to cool and set.
    11.Now when cool you are ready to enjoy it.

Notes

  • You can scoop out in wet cloth or just smear a plate with ghee and scoop.
  • Don’t miss to add ginger powder it makes the dish totally flavourful.
  • Add some roasted gram dal when adding coconut pieces it will be good.
  • Amount of jaggery used here will be perfect but if you want some more sweetness you can add more.
