karnataka style bisi bele bath recipe /bisi bele bhath/bisi bele huli anna

Ingredients
  

  • Raw rice /pacharici - 1 cup
  • Thuvaram paruppu/Toor dal - 1/2 cup
  • Salt to taste

Veggies to be added:

  • Some big chunks of carrot potatoes and small onions(whole) - 1/2 cup
  • Turmeric powder
  • Tamarind - extract from small lemon sized ball

For seasoning:

  • Ghee - 2-3 tbsp
  • Cashews - 2 tbsp
  • Some curry leaves

Instructions
 

  • Make the bisi bele bath powder as given and keep ready.
  • Soak tamarind take extract and keep ready.
  • Wash dal and rice add 4 cups water and pressure cook dal and rice together.
  • Cut veggies in big chunks and keep ready.
  • Now add some water and boil veggies in a pan by adding turmeric.
  • When half cooked add tamarind water and continue cooking.
  • When veggies are cooked add dal-rice mixture to this.
  • Add salt as required and add water to adjust the consistency.
  • Let it cook for 2-3 minutes.
  • Keep stirring now add masala powder.
  • Mix every thing cook for 5 more minutes.
  • Close lid and keep the flame low for 2 minutes.
  • In-between make tempering with cashews and curry leaves in ghee add to the rice.
  • Switch off and serve.

Notes

If not using ghee use Gingelly oil.
Adding cashews is optional.
Both dal and rice should be cooked right till soft,not too much(gooey) so that when we add to veggies its going to cook further and will come to right consistency.
When adding tamarind be careful as it may become too tangy.
