Palak is a very flexible vegetable that we can make loads of recipes with it. This palak ki dal recipe is one such comforting and simple dish that can be done in a jiffy. Already I have a simple dal recipe in my blog which will be great with hot rice.Here for this palak ki dal recipe I like to have it with chapati or phulkas. palak ki dal recipeBut even rice will be good which comes as a second option.Its a very easy dish to make when you are in a hurry or tired. This palak ki dal recipe is a power packed package that is very good for children. I love to add some ghee at the end but it’s purely optional.If you are using tomatoes then you add it when sautéing onions itself.If using tomatoes then there is no need to use lemon juice.

INGREDIENTS:

Moong dal(yellow)/pasiparuppu – 1/2 cup
Palak/spinach – 1 hand full(cleaned and chopped leaves alone)
Salt to taste
Turmeric powder – 1/2 tsp
Green chillies/pacha milaga – 2-3(chopped or slit)
Jeera/jeeragam – 1 tsp
Chopped big onions – 3-4 tbsp
Finely chopped ginger – 3/4 tbsp
Finely chopped garlic – 3/4 tbsp
Asafoetida – 1/2 tbsp
Castor oil/velakennai – 1/2 tsp(optional)
Ghee – 1 tsp
Oil – 1 tsp

METHOD:

1.Wash moong dal and pressure cook by adding water and castor oil and keep them ready.
2.Clean the leaves with water and chop them finely.
3.Keep a kadai with oil add cumin seeds,when it pops add onions with green chillies.
4.Saute till transparent and add hing water.
5.Add chopped ginger and garlic and stir.
6.Add spinach leaves with needed salt and turmeric.
7.Let it cook for 2-3 minutes,it leaves water by itself.
8.Now add cooked dal and some water to bring to a gravy consistency.
9.Let it boil till all the rawness goes off.
10.Switch off and add lemon juice.
11.Add ghee.
12.Serve hot with chapati,phulkas and even rice.

Notes

Adding a dollop of ghee is optional.
Even if you want you can substitute tomatoes with lemon juice.
You can keep the gravy thick or thin as you want it to be.
Instead of moong dal you can use toor dal too.
