vazhaipoo vadai /valaipoo paruppu vadaiIam fond of this banana flower vadai recipe that I totally lose my numbers when relishing it.I totally agree with you!cleaning these valaipoo is very tough. But, once you do it its all worth the hard work.I will give you some tips that I know!while cleaning these banana blossoms first remove the flowers in bunches then take out the stigma part(stick like portion) and transparent film-like pinkish covering. When you are done with all ,then chop it with vazhaipoo vadai /valaipoo paruppu vadaikitchen scissors,it will be more easier. You can chop them finely this way.Keep the bunches intact so that you can easily chop them.If, available at your place use pattani paruppu and it is called vadai paruppu at some places.If not available use only kadalai paruppu alone and do this banana flower vadai recipe.Generally,this pattani paruppu is used to increase taste and flavour of the vadai.Sometimes even cloves ,garlic and cinnamon too are added but for this banana flower vadai recipe it’s not needed as of to bring the real taste of banana blossoms.

INGREDIENTS:

Split peas/pattani paruppu – 1/2 cup
Bengal gram dal/kadala paruppu – 1/2 cup
Banana flower/vazhaipoo – cleaned and chopped – 11/4 cup
Ginger 3/4 inch piece
Salt to taste
Dried red chillies/vara milagai – 3 or as per need
Some curry leaves
Some chopped coriander
Onions chopped finely – 1/2 cup(have used small onions)
Fennelseed/sombu powder – 3/4 tsp
Oil to fry

METHOD:

1.First clean banana flower by removing the stick like part and a transparent covering ,then chop the flowers and put in buttermilk water mixture till use.
2.In-between soak both dals with chillies for 1 hour.
3.Now strain dal with chillies add ginger,salt,curry leaves and sombu powder.
4.Grind very coarsely without adding any water.
5.Now transfer to a bowl add chopped onions,chopped coriander and chopped flower(squeeze out from buttermilk water).
6.Mix and check for salt if any add,then make balls of desired size and press to disc shaped vadai’s.
7.In-between heat oil in a kadai when its hot add shaped vadai fry till golden and take out in a tissue.

Notes

For the grinding part it should be coarse and if you need you can add some rice flour for more crunch.
Instead of red chillies you can use even green chillies.
Adjust the flame ,cook in medium till golden.
